Grilling on a plank

While salmon has been the long partner of the plank there are other foods that are just as tasty such as chicken, pork and even veggies. In choosing a plank, pick only untreated cedar, alder, hickory, or maple. Here are a few other tips to ensure plank-grilling success:
  • Prepare the plank by soaking it at least one hour in a bucket or cooler filled with water. This adds moisture to the wood and prevents it from burning on the grill.
  • Add 1 tablespoon of salt or 1 cup of white wine, apple juice, citrus, or berry juice to the soaking water to accent wood aromas.
  • If a plank is being used for the first time, season it by placing it on a preheated grill for 2 minutes, turning once. Lightly toasting the plank on both sides will intensify its smoky flavor and prevent warping. When the plank starts crackling, it's ready for cooking.
  • Place marinated or ready-to-cook foods directly on the plank. Keep the grill's lid closed as much as possible to maintain temperatures and maximize smoking. Note: planked food does not have to be turned during grilling.
  • Keep a spray bottle filled with water handy so flames can be extinguished if the plank starts to burn.

Boys vs Girl clothing- Girls win

So I always wanted to have a little boy. I never even knew what I'd name a girl if I had one so when the doctor told me I was having a boy at my 20 week sonogram I was thrilled! That is until I had to start looking for clothes for him. Pink shirts, pink pants, flowers, frills and polka dots...and one rack of "Moms Lil Prince". Awesome. And the madness doesn't stop there. Come Christmas and holiday time while the girls section was littered with red dresses and fancy garb, the boys "section" had two argyle sweaters and a one-piece that said "My 1st X-Mas". Ohhh all the choices!!!

There are always the neutral clothes. You know the gender friendly outfits that are made for baby eunuchs. Granted, the outfits are usually pretty cute and come in pretty greens and browns, but for a baby like mine whom people always mistake for a girl because of his hair these outfits would only exacerbate the issue.
So why exactly IS it so hard to find clothes for boys? Am I the only one that has noticed this? Considering my son was born with perfect eyebrows and beautiful long and curly hair, maybe he can get away with a cute lil shirt with a pink flower on it.

WTF?! Men actually lose weight faster than women!

So as you know I have been on a diet and working on losing weight before my son's bday next month. My boyfriend and I started dieting the same day and for a week we have been eating the same thing ad doing the same general regiment yet he has already lost 10 pounds and I've only lost 6! Now six pounds is better than nothing but there have been days where I will even eat LESS than him, go for longer walks, run up and down stairs and so far he's still ahead. How is this possible??

So I looked it up and apparently men DO lose weight faster than women. As bogus as it is here are some of the logistics behind it:
  1. Men have more muscle. This allows them to burn more calories, even when at rest.
  2. Women are predisposed to store and retain fat. Women have higher levels of estrogen, a hormone that works works to keep the fat on a woman's body so it's easier for her to get pregnant. That means women have to work harder to lose weight at the same rate as men.
  3. Men's bodies respond more quickly to exercise. Women's bodies, meanwhile, actually go into a sort of starvation mode, slowing the metabolism to hang onto more fat.
  4. Women may have a lower tolerance for exercise. Women have smaller lung capacity than men, which can make women feel as though they are working harder than men even if the women are working at the same level. This can also make exercise feel harder in the heat or high humidity.
I hate to say it girls, but they boys might have us on this one.

Can't get any girlier than a Pink Martini!!!

How yummy! A cocktail that just by appearance says "I've been made for a girl!" Here's how you make it...
  • 2 oz of p.i.n.k. vodka,
  • 1 scoop vanilla ice cream,
  • 1 oz strawberry liqueur,
  • large dollop of fresh whip cream
  • 1 plump blueberry.
Combine, p.i. n.k., strawberry liqueur and ice cream in a blender with one scoop of crushed iced and blend until creamy. Top with whipped cream and a blueberry on top.
